This was the annual Saint Valentine's Day program, meaning the focus was on love songs throughout, with a nice mix of old favorites combined with new stuff that's come out in the 365 days since the last show inspired by the romance in your life was streamed to your ears. Highlights from tunes released in the past year include a favorite from Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3; M. Ward covering Buddy Holly (who put in an appearance as well); a sad one from the Magnetic Fields as they go down with the ship; Camera Obscura trying hard to break it off (and failing); Findlay Brown showing his appreciation of Roy Orbison (also in there as well); the Cocktail Slippers wondering what Saint Valentine's Day will bring; Rosanne Cash lamenting the change in her love life; and Neko Case admitting to herself that love is what she needs.
Some of the older songs that always seem to make it into this show include Tim Moore's track that's really a love song to the power of rock and roll (but it's a great tune and the title makes it impossible to pass up); Tom Waits' beautifully descriptive song of awakening and understanding; Harry Nilsson's hilariously sad song of love gone wrong; two different tunes from Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle that share a title and similar sentiments; and Randy Newman offering the ultimate love song, which definitely would sit at the top of my list in this rather large catergory if I had one.
Here's another one from Findlay Brown
