This program set sail with a track from Paul McCartney's new live release that originally appeared on last year's Fireman disc, and the forward momentum of that one reminded me of a tune from last summer's All Smiles album. Maintaining the energy was the Helio Sequence, and then we heard the Gang of Four adding a bit of social commentary to the mix followed by Paul Weller feeling the love and Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros offering some peals of wisdom to close out this opener.
The mood changed in this section with Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions looking back on some unpleasant memories followed by Black Whales pleased to be free and clear of entanglements. Their tune recalls an old Velvet Underground favorite about what's lost or forgotten that shares a connection the Sonic Youth track that followed, and from there we heard Brian Eno extending the theme before the Big Pink finished up with a rhythmically compatible tune from their recent debut.
We began here with Headless Heroes covering a mournful Nick Cave tune, and followed it with a beautiful acoustic track from Jorma Kaukonen featuring some flowing finger picking that fed nicely into one from Kurt Vile's latest disc that's in a similar vein. From there we heard Inara George trying to get her bearings, which led to Elvis Perkins having found his in a song with a rhythmic guitar pattern that conjured up one of a favorite from the Faces.
As the calendar turned to December, it occurred to me that not just the year but also the decade was quickly coming to a close, and I was overcome with a desire to create a musical accounting for all that time. Normally the last show of every year is given over to as many tunes from the past 12 months as I can cram into three hours, but even with the additional time over our regular two-plus hours together there are still some tracks that get left out. That's why I didn't want to devote every remaining show to the years 2000 to 2008, and even if I did it would have been impossible, as their simply aren't enough slots left to make it work. So as was mentioned on the program, I decided that a dozen tracks seemed a reasonable amount to devote to each year, but then I couldn't make that last final cut, so it became a baker's dozen instead. That's how we ended the this program, with the year 2000 in 13 tunes, and as was also mentioned at the time, this was just a snapshot of the year, nothing definitive or best of about the list, no order other than searching for the best flow (as is always the case), and probably most important of all after sifting through a lot of stuff, these were the tracks I felt like hearing at that moment. Still, not a bad list, if I do say so myself. And we will continue on with 2001 to 2008 in upcoming programs, which will take us to the annual Holiday Extravaganza followed by a look back at this past year in music to close out 2009.
Here's another one from Paul McCartney
