Inspiration for this opener began with the Langhorne Slim track from his new disc; the background vocals recall both Ike Reilly (in Assassination mode) and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band (from remarkable London show in 1975 that was finally released in 2006). In addition, the horns on Slim's tune seem at times to be echoing the Etta James track that followed; from there it was a natural step to Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and that led to Candi Staton from back in the day with a terrific cover of a song best associated with Otis Redding.

We began here with an Exene Cervenka track from the new disc that has a hint of Southwestern/Mexican sound, which was amplified by the trumpet on the Love tune that followed. The Old 97's continued down that path, bringing on the Beatles covering a theme song from an early '60s film that has the same descending guitar line. Then we heard the Breeders singing in Spanish, which brought on Bob Dylan and a tune with a certain mid-20th century Continental feel courtesy of David Hidalgo's accordian. One from Rosanne Cash's excellent new disc conjured up an old Sam Cooke track, and from there it was Willy DeVille with his acoustic trio to finish up.

Joe Pug has released an EP meant to fill the space between last year's debut and the new album coming up next year. It consists of tracks from the sessions that produced that initial disc and most have a similar appeal, including the one that opened this section. His need to be rid of "Susan" was followed by the Byrds with some advice that might seem applicable before a final choice is made, and from there we heard a Mississippi John Hurt tune about a woman with an independent streak done up quite nicely by Ramblin' Jack Elliott. A couple of Hank Williams covers followed—one by the Grateful Dead and another by Beck that takes a different musical approach, including a bit of synthesizer. That segued nicely into the synths that open a Taken By Trees tune from their latest disc, and the mood created by that one carried over to the Air track from their new one that followed and on to a favorite from Grizzly Bear's springtime release.

Paul Westerberg's latest EP has started to grow on me, and we began here with one that has some nice slide guitar that brought to mind George Harrison. Then it was on to the WIlco track from their 2009 disc that certainly reflects some time spent listening to the Quiet Beatle's music, and that led to one from All Smiles appealing debut that brought on Sweden's Soundtrack of Our LIves sounding a lot like the Strawbs, so we heard a track from their mid-'70s heydey. From there it was a short bit of pop precision from the MInus 5 to close this program out.

Here's another one from the Grateful Dead
