Inspiration for this opener came from the new Big Pink disc, which many have pointed out looks back to original shoegaze bands of the late '80s and early '90s like My Bloody Valentine and the Verve. However, what came to mind for me after I first heard their contribution to this set was the Psychedelic Furs original version of the song that initially brought that band to everyone's attention. David Bowie was another name that floated to the surface, and the driving guitar on that one brought on PJ Harvey assisted by Thom Yorke. The latest digital download from Radiohead followed, which seemed to meld quite well into Joy Division and then on into the Magnetic Fields to finish it off.
A change of pace to open this next section was provided by the Real Tuesday Weld; '30s jazz and blues are among the many musical styles that RTW's Stephen Coates employs in his tunes, and the track we heard shared that feel with the Ringo Starr song that followed. It was written for his friend Harry Nilsson, who gave us one from an early disc that is quintessential Nilsson; from there we heard Neko Case covering another one from Harry that led to Ryan Adams in pop troubadour mode. Langhorne Slim sounding an awful lot like Mr. Adams from his brand new disc brought on a favorite from Clem Snide, and the beautiful flowing feel of that one led us to an old Bob Dylan track to close it out.
I recently read that Mick Jones and Topper Headon were in a recording studio together for the first time in over 25 years; they recorded a new version of an old Clash tune that has given its name to a new organization founded by Billy Bragg to help provide instruments for folks who are using music as a means of rehabilitating prison inmates. After hearing the original from the Clash we moved on to Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros, and the reggae beat of that one brought forth Augustus Pablo, the late master of the melodica. He came to mind after I heard the new Air instrumental that followed; I can't be sure but it definitely seems that they've included a melodica on the track. It helped create a sort of semi-Southwest atmosphere, which is why we moved on to Giant Sand, and from there Zeep added one that began with horses hooves approaching from the distance and ended in a place that made for a nice segue to the Postmarks tune that finished up.
The change in seasons provided a suitable way to end this program, so we heard a selection of tunes to help make the transition from Summer to Fall, highlighted by the Kinks track that kicked it off and the Van Morrison tune that closed it out. I am now ready for all that Autumn has to offer, and hope these songs provided a similar result for you.
Here's another one from Simon & Garfunkel
