Al Green got this one going with one of his early '70s masterpieces, which was followed by a more soulful version of a track from Stuart Murdoch's God Help The Girl project that originally appeared on the last Belle and Sebastian disc. From there we heard Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings with a terrific cover of an old Shuggie Otis tune, and then it was Shuggie with his best-known song (through the Brothers Johnson virtual carbon copy that became a hit several years later). A track from Lushlife's latest that adds some Shuggie-like flourishes to his classic rap sound fed into the total mashup approach of the Avalanches before the Postmarks finished with an irresistable slice of horn-filled pop set to a stiff backbeat from their upcoming disc.
This section began with Joni Mitchell's moody tale of suburban anomie followed by Grizzly Bear attempting to stay tuned in to the here and now. Then we had DeVotchKa seemingly finding an oasis of happiness contrasted with Paul Simon's story of a woman starting out down that path; Brian Eno lent a hand on Simon's album, and here he followed with a track that holds a simple truth applicable to all of the thoughts expressed in this set, including those in the Helio Sequence tune that finished it off.
An energetic rocker from the prolific Robert Pollard opened this set and was followed by an appealing burst of noisy guitars from Sonic Youth's recent disc. A prime influence on that band was the Velvet Underground, and here we heard them from the reunion shows that happened in Paris in 1993 with a tune that David Bowie has covered. That one was taken from the final concert appearance he made with the Spiders From Mars, and then we heard three more tracks about bands from Mark Pickerel And His Praying Hands, WIlco and Nick Lowe. His tongue-in-cheek paen to the Bay City Rollers and Rollermania was followed by Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3 looking back to a different group of music fans from the same mid-'70s period in the UK. The Cleaners From Venus followed with another time machine snapshot, this time from the Swinging '60s in London, which brought us to the Beatles and the tune that begat a wonderful animated film. We heard that one to recognize the life and work of artist Heniz Edelmann, the man behind the images in that movie who passed away recently.
Musician John Dawson also died in the past few weeks; he was one of the main guys in the New Riders of the Purple Sage, who I saw put on a couple of excellent concerts many moons ago. One from the New Riders most popular disc was followed by a new track from Deer Tick feeding nicely into one from the Old 97's that recalls an old Drifters tune, although we heard the Willy DeVille version here. That one's title conjured up Robert Gomez with a favorite from the middle release of his three discs so far, and that brought on Beth Orton (with some assistance from M. Ward) and the title tune of her last album. Finally, the strongest track off of Bob Dylan's recent disc led to the sublime T-Bone Walker to close this one out.
Here's another one from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings
